| Hi... I'm Allan Ierardi (eye-rar'-dee), the guy behind Shafer Resorts,
and I Indiana Beach. I've wanted to share my passion for the
Monticello - Indian Beach area but wasn't sure how. While browsing for info about the beach, I
wound up searching, clicking and
encountering endless computer generated pages with little or
nothing useful. I decided to create this guide to Lake Shafer and surrounding
Spend a day at the beach and have memories of your own!
It started for me when I lived in the dressing room at the
ballroom for the entire 1963 season. It's now revealed 51 years
(ouch!) later as an interesting chapter in my life. Imagine, 16
years old and playing guitar six nights a week in the beach
house band. The pay wasn't enough for lodging, even
back then. Ask any musician. Don't think bad of the
band leader or beach management. They weren't aware!
Dick Halleman Band 1963 - A great photo from the Indiana Beach Ballroom. I'm the guitar player third from the right. This was used on one of the many IB postcards. Love those gold jackets!
I felt like Elvis...
The band, left to right, saxman 1, saxman2, saxman3 (sorry about that, can't recall their names), Dick Halleman (sax, vocals), Libby Halleman (piano, vocals), Tommy McCormick (drums, Tom Baker (trumpet, bass), Al
Ierardi (behind the back guitar), Dick Dilling (behind the neck guitar) and Ray Cork (trumpet, bass). I worked with this band from the fall of '62 through the winter of '63. We played just about every ballroom and country club in central Illinois and Indiana.
My life's dream was to have a blues trio and play upstairs at the Roof Garden Lounge. Visit

One thing I'd like you to know and understand. I was just 16 when I played the Ballroom six nights a week for $75. I turned 17 just before closing that year. 1963. It was a summer to remember, and I've never forgotten it. As you see in this site, a labor of love, it is with me today. This is not all that is is. It can be your memory, your adventure. It is just as exciting to the young minds as it was to me.
